The Tauntaun is a fictional, bipedal reptomammal native to the icy planet Hoth in the Star Wars universe. They are featured prominently in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.
Tauntauns are adapted to survive extreme cold. They possess thick, insulating fur and a hardy physiology allowing them to thrive in the harsh Hoth environment. They are characterized by their horned heads and distinctive odor, often described as unpleasant.
Rebels stationed at Echo Base utilized Tauntauns as mounts for patrols outside the base. Due to the extreme cold making mechanical transport unreliable, Tauntauns provided a practical, if smelly, alternative for short-range travel across the frozen landscape. Han Solo famously used the internal warmth of a deceased Tauntaun to protect Luke Skywalker from hypothermia after Luke became stranded in the Hoth wilderness.
